Peanut-Free Version of Muddy Buddies® [Dairy-Free, Nut-Free, Gluten-Free]

Image

I made these for my nephew’s middle school graduation party on Sunday. When my brother saw Savannah eating them, he questioned, “She can eat THAT?!” I responded with a smile, “Yes, I made it with Sunbutter.” When we were kids my siblings and I made the “People Puppy Chow” version of this treat. Eventually, Betty Crocker published their version of the recipe, which uses less powdered sugar. This is great for parties…easy to make a large batch, everybody loves it, and they are all surprised it is dairy-free, gluten-free and peanut-free!

Allergen-Free Muddy Buddies®

9 cups allergen-free Chex cereal (I use Rice Chex)
1 cup allergen-free chocolate chips (recommended: Enjoy Life or Whole Foods 365 brand Vegan Chocolate Chips)
1/2 cup nut-free spread, such as Sunbutter or Soynut butter
1/4 cup allergen-free margarine (recommended: Earth Balance Soy-Free Non-Hydrogenated Buttery Spread)
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 1/2 cups powdered sugar

Procedure

  1. Into large bowl, measure cereal; set aside.
  2. In 1-quart microwavable bowl, microwave chocolate chips, Sunbutter or soybutter and margarine uncovered on high 1 minute; stir. Microwave about 30 seconds longer or until mixture can be stirred smooth. Stir in vanilla. Pour mixture over cereal, stirring until evenly coated. Pour into 2-gallon resealable food-storage plastic bag (I use a large airtight food storage container).
  3. Add powdered sugar. Seal bag or container; shake until well coated. Spread on waxed paper to cool. Store in airtight container in refrigerator.

Makes 18 servings (1/2 cup each)

I am now 21 years old and I still have to struggle with my peanut and tree nut allergy everyday. I’m not going to lie, all the reactions people have towards my allergy and the way I used to get kidded by friends while being excluded in fun school activities or parties has sat with me for a very long time. Not too long ago I had an allergic reaction due to someone not washing their hands before handling the contents of my salad. I seriously wanted to cry at how much I have to worry about my allergy. I get rather upset when I have a reaction because I just want to be normal and enjoy things like everybody else. I can’t tell you how much it means to me that you posted this recipe and that you are trying to make people aware of peanut allergies. I truly appreciate this.

    • Thank you for sharing this comment. I pray often that my daughter will learn handle her food allergies. I don’t want her to be afraid, but to be aware. Yes, she is different in that way, but that also makes her more special, stronger, and more compassionate towards others that are different in other ways. My purpose for this blog is to let others know that we can adjust our own lives, and educate others. Your note tells me that we’re getting there one step at a time. Now go eat those Peanut-Free Muddy Buddies! You deserve it 🙂
