I made these for my nephew’s middle school graduation party on Sunday. When my brother saw Savannah eating them, he questioned, “She can eat THAT?!” I responded with a smile, “Yes, I made it with Sunbutter.” When we were kids my siblings and I made the “People Puppy Chow” version of this treat. Eventually, Betty Crocker published their version of the recipe, which uses less powdered sugar. This is great for parties…easy to make a large batch, everybody loves it, and they are all surprised it is dairy-free, gluten-free and peanut-free!

Allergen-Free Muddy Buddies®
9 cups allergen-free Chex cereal (I use Rice Chex)
1 cup allergen-free chocolate chips (recommended: Enjoy Life or Whole Foods 365 brand Vegan Chocolate Chips)
1/2 cup nut-free spread, such as Sunbutter or Soynut butter
1/4 cup allergen-free margarine (recommended: Earth Balance Soy-Free Non-Hydrogenated Buttery Spread)
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 1/2 cups powdered sugar
Procedure
- Into large bowl, measure cereal; set aside.
- In 1-quart microwavable bowl, microwave chocolate chips, Sunbutter or soybutter and margarine uncovered on high 1 minute; stir. Microwave about 30 seconds longer or until mixture can be stirred smooth. Stir in vanilla. Pour mixture over cereal, stirring until evenly coated. Pour into 2-gallon resealable food-storage plastic bag (I use a large airtight food storage container).
- Add powdered sugar. Seal bag or container; shake until well coated. Spread on waxed paper to cool. Store in airtight container in refrigerator.
